Mr. William Theron “Bill” Lankford, age 84, passed away Tuesday morning, July 20, 2010, at his residence, following an extended illness. Mr. Lankford, a native of Coffee County, retired after 31 years as a Captain with the City of Douglas Fire Department. He was the son of the late James D. Lankford and the late Iris Joyce Lankford. He was a Veteran of the U. S. Army and Army Air Corps. Mr. Lankford was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Ward 1. Survivors include: His Wife: Dorothy Hobby Lankford of Douglas, Ga. Daughters: Gail Carver of Ambrose, Ga.; Denise Rowell of Douglas, Ga. Son: Theron Lankford of Douglas, Ga. Brothers: J. D. Lankford of Broxton, Ga.; Chester Lankford of Douglas, Ga.; and Raymond Lankford of Waycross, Ga. 9 Grandchildren, and 7 Great Grandchildren. Several Nieces, Nephews, Friends, and Other Relatives. Funeral Services were held Thursday morning, July 22, 2010, at 10:00 A. M., at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, with Mr. Ovid O’Neal, State President Dr. Timothy Fussell, and Bishop Mike Gowen presiding. An Opening Prayer was offered by Brother David Cox. A Closing Prayer was presented by Ray Fussell. The Interment followed in the Cumorah Cemetery. Brother Ovid O’Neal presented the Dedication at the gravesite. The Honor Guard of the Douglas City Fire Department including Scott Wiggins, James Graham, Lane Burkhalter, Frank Moncada, Lee Clements, Luke Merritt, and Bruce Whitley served as Active Pallbearers. Fellow Retired Firemen of the Douglas City Fire Department, Chief Tim White, Casey Wright, Johnny Wayne Jowers, Clifford Stone, Dale Merritt, Henry Mizel, Glen Courson, Freddie Davis, and Bill Green, as well as the Congregation served as Honorary Pallbearers. Special Musical Selections, “I Need Thee Every Hour”, and “I Know That My Redeemer Lives”, were presented as Congregational Hymns, with Lois Mills, at the Piano. “Pre-Lude” and “Post-Lude” soft hymns were presented by the Pianist, Lois Mills.
